I’ve lived in southern CA since 1989 and have never caught a fresh water fish here what’s so different here?
I’ve been fishing in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana never had a problem catching fish any of these places. I’ve tried many times in southern California with no luck. Are these areas in southern California that over fished? Or maybe doing something wrong. I have lived in Temecula all this time and only tried the lakes around here. I use worms and a wide verity lures don’t matter no fish. I’m very confused at this time.
I don’t know what you have been doing wrong or where you fished. But, fishing around Temecula is far from being bad unless you were fishing at the Duck Pond at Ynez and Rancho California Rd..
There are some good fishing lakes around you.
Lake Elsinore. That place got a carp problem and that lake was infested with tons of small carp. Bigger carp were a little hard to find because there were too much competitions for food. Regular angler could pull about 2 or 3 carp out of the lake. If you have the know how, landing 30+ carp in one morning really isn’t that hard at all. You’ll just get a little bored because most carp there are under 10lbs. A hybrid bass (striper and white bass mix) nicknamed “wiper” or “viper” was introduced to that lake to eat baby carp. Those hybrid bass were quite aggressive and they’re very fun to catch. They could be caught on both lures and baits.
Lake Skinner. Good striper bass place. Quite a few cats in there too. Large mouth bass action isn’t that bad as well. Too bad you’ll need a small boat to get the most out of that lake.
Diamond Valley Lake aka DVL. It is one of the freshwater fishing hot spots in SoCal. That place wasn’t as great this year but it is still pretty good. Striper bass is the main attraction there at the moment. That place is known for large mouth and trout action though. I think that place’s got most SoCal freshwater species.
Corona Lake. This is a pay to fish lake. They claimed they receive a double stocking of trout this week. If this is true, fishing should be pretty good this weekend. Most anglers use Berkley trout worm, power bait or inflated nightcrawlers there.
Golf courses. Make sure you get their permission first. Reactions from golf courses differ from time to time but it doesn’t hurt to try. Sometimes, you may have to buy a game first. Believe it or not, large mouth bass action is pretty good on those golf course ponds.
Now, for local residents only. I’m not going to post location or name because last time I did that, I created a poacher problem for the place. That lake got pretty good large mouth and carp action. There are also catfish in there as well. Hint: “residents only”.
